Project goal
Promote, by supporting civil society, equal protection of ESC (economic, social and cultural) rights for groups particularly vulnerable to discrimination in Uzbekistan.

Target audience
Lawyers - judges, lawyers, experts and representatives of national human rights agencies, civil society institutions, representatives of discriminated groups, law and journalism students, government representatives and parliamentarians.

 

Anticipated outcomes
-    Development of 4 training modules on ESC rights protection, covering rights in the workplace, right to health and reproductive rights of women, right to affordable housing, rights of people with disabilities;
-    Organization of 3 training seminars on ESC rights with the participation of 65 representatives of civil society and judges;
-    Five civil society experts from Uzbekistan sharing their experiences in Switzerland;
-    Development of 5 legal documents, including information documents to the courts of Uzbekistan; 
-    Organization of 5 activities to protect ESC rights in coordination with civil society institutions; 
-    Organization of 6 discussion seminars and a summer school on ESC rights for 150 representatives of civil society;
-    Creation of 4 videos on various ESC rights issues.
 

What has been done:
Three international public discussions have been held on pivotal legal issues for Uzbekistan:
•    Implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Uzbekistan;
•    The UN treaty body reporting system: the important role of civil society - focuses on the State reporting procedure to the UN treaty bodies, preparation of the State report, alternative reports and cooperation with Uzbek civil society in the State reporting procedure;
•    Effective implementation of the recommendations of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) by Uzbekistan - following the publication of the conclusions and recommendations of these two important UN human rights bodies, which should now be implemented by Uzbekistan.
Training sessions were held for judges and lawyers in Uzbekistan to raise participants' practical knowledge of international legal norms and their application in their work.
